About the roles:
We are seeking five excellent Research Scientists with high potential to work within, and across, five discipline-based research groups within our Directorate of Science and Technology.
The National Oceanography Centre is the UK's national research organisation delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean, and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. NOC is at the vanguard of international marine research, tackling the major global environmental research issues and translational impacts to benefit society (http://noc.ac.uk/ [ http://noc.ac.uk/ ]).
We provide an exciting, dynamic and outstanding research environment supported by research scientists, technologists and engineers. The facilities include super-computing facilities, world-class analytical laboratories and access to our global marine observation infrastructure including robotic underwater vehicles and oceangoing research vessels.
About you:
You will have a strong research background and be seeking the opportunity to further develop your research career through scientific publications. You will be able to actively participate in the development and funding of collaborative research programs, both at a national and international level, and have a desire to become a future leader in your field. It is essential to have a PhD in a relevant area, or equivalent experience.
We are seeking candidates with expertise in the following areas;
* Oceans and Extreme Weather Modelling
High-resolution climate modelling to understand the role of the ocean in high impact weather events
* Coastal Ocean Biophysical Modelling
Fine-resolution shelf seas modelling integrating physics, ecosystems and sediment dynamics
* Particle Flux Oceanography
Advance organic sinking particle flux research within the context of the global carbon cycle
* Zooplankton Ecology
Advance zooplankton research as part of ocean biogeochemical cycles linking primary production to higher trophic levels
* Sea Level Science
Advance understanding regional sea level processes using both theory, remote and in situ observations, and numerical models
* Arctic Physical Oceanography
Advance observation and modelling of Arctic shelf-basin exchanges and implications for ice and ocean circulation and fluxes
* Geoscience on Seafloor Fluid Flow
Advance understanding of seafloor fluid flow, especially at high latitudes, including greenhouse gas flux, geochemical processes and potential impacts on slope stability
* Geoscience on Human Impacts on the Deep Seafloor
Advance research across disciplines to assess and quantify human impacts on the deep seafloor (e.g. mining, oil and gas exploration, bottom trawling, telecommunications cables)
* Autonomous Carbon Sensor Engineering
Develop and integrate carbon system sensors with operational observation systems including gliders and Argo floats
* Nutrient Micro-sensor Engineering
Develop and commercialise nutrient micro-sensors into applications, products, and widespread use.
Salary:
£26,715 to £37,875 per annum dependent on experience, skills, and qualifications.

The initial appointment will be for 4 years and will form part of a tenure track initiative/scheme that will be supported by a structured programme of training, coaching, mentoring and regular evaluation to actively encourage individual growth and development. Having demonstrated a proven track record of research delivery and scientific leadership within the 4 year period, successful candidates can expect to be offered open ended positions.
